Sports camps

NEW YORK -- Want to spend your vacation learning to rock-climb, snowboard, kayak, or surf? Or maybe you want to become a faster swimmer, a better runner or a more advanced diver.

The April issue of Outside magazine lists the best sports camps in America, from the American Alpine Institute for rock-climbing in Bellingham, Wash., to a rowing school at the Craftsbury Sculling Center in Vermont.

Others that made the list include Dharma Yoga Center in Miami Beach; Nancy Emerson School of Surfing in Maui, Hawaii; Andre Puyans Fly Fishing seminars in Island Park, Idaho; Perris Valley Skydiving camp in Perris, Calif.; National Outdoor Leadership School in Lander, Wyo., which teaches wilderness skills; and Annapolis Sailing School in Maryland.

Baseball trip

GUILFORD, Conn. -- If you love baseball and you love to travel, you'll want to check out 'The Ultimate Baseball Road-Trip: A Fan's Guide to Major League Stadiums.'

Written by Josh Pahigian and Kevin O'Connell, the 531-page paperback is 'part travel manual, part ballpark atlas, part baseball history book, part epic narrative and part restaurant and city guide, all rolled into one handy volume.' The book describes the unique history and features of each ballpark, the advantages of various seats and how to get choice views, local customs and culinary offerings. The book, from the Connecticut-based publisher Lyons Press, is $22.95.

Spa trends

NEW YORK -- It goes without saying that spas offer massage, yoga, facials, manicures and pedicures. But how about dental work, samba lessons, arthritis management and midlife crisis advice?

More spas are offering programs that appeal to people with specific concerns. Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Ariz. (520-749-9000), invites individuals who've had heart attacks or are at high risk for heart disease to attend a week of prevention and wellness programs run by heart specialists.

Don Cesar Beach Resort in St. Pete Beach, Fla. (727-360-1881), invites pet owners for a two-night stay that includes massages, breakfast and 'a day of dog and master beauty.'
