Samuel Kibiri of Pullman blistered the field in the 8-kilometer Seafair Torchlight Run, beating runner-up Craig Dickson of Olympia by 28 seconds with a winning time of 24 minutes, 14 seconds. Elena Burykina of Tacoma topped the women's field in 27:13, and Jacob Heilveil of Bothell won the four-mile wheelchair event in 16:57.
-- Bellevue's Peter Newton won his title yesterday at the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Team Championships in Lake Lanore, Ga., as a member of the winning four-man kayak crew, while Seattle's Ryan Lorenz and Nate Johnson paddled with the second-place crew.
Also, Seattle's Tim Wiley finished second in the 200-meter, two-man kayak event; and Johnson added a third in the 200-meter single canoe event.
Seattle-area paddlers earned seven spots on the U.S. Senior World Championship squad. Newton and Juraj Osusky made the men's kayak team; Tamara Jenkins and Kathy Colin made the women's kayak team; and Johnson, David Fort and Jordan Malloch earned three of the four canoeing berths.
-- Salmon fishing in Marine Area 3 will close at midnight tomorrow when the projected quota of 800 cocho will have been reached, the Department of Fish and Wildlife announced. Area 3 extends from the mouth of the Queets River to Cape Alava (including La Push).

-- The Washington trio of Joel Skarbo, Keith Coleman and Clint Jensen finished seventh, 27 strokes behind the winning Southern California team, in the 31st Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Makena Golf Club in Maui, Hawaii. The Washington squad finished 72 holes at 592.
